Helene Brown

Helene Brown has spent the last 42 years tirelessly fighting cancer as a “political oncologist,” educating the public in prevention and early detection and striving to raise millions for research. As a staunch advocate for cancer research and prevention, Ms. Brown was instrumental in the Surgeon General’s report on smoking as well as demonstrating the importance of pap smears for women. She was recently honored with the Minerva Award from the California Governor’s Office – an honor bestowed on women who have dedicated themselves to building outreach programs that have made a difference in the lives of Californians and furthered positive change. Her many accomplishments include serving as the former L.A. County Commissioner of Public Health, past National Vice President of the American Cancer Society, and Senior Lecturer at UCLA’s School of Public Health. Helene Brown is unswerving in her belief that the overall death rate from cancer can be slashed in half by 2015.

Kay Coleman is President & CEO of WTI/Change Accelerators, a management consulting firm specializing in change management and employee education. Ms. Coleman has over 25 years of consulting and management experience in strategic planning, reengineering sales management, and human resources. Before co-funding Work Force Transformation, Inc., in 1996, Ms. Coleman was managing director of Hammer and Company, where she advised senior executives and conducted seminars on reengineering, process improvement, and change management. She is a member of the Partnership Council of the American Cancer Society, Border Region, and previously served on the Board of Directors for the American Cancer Society’s Golden Triangle Unit. In addition, she is a member of the President’s Circle at the University of Tennessee, where she also endowed a scholarship.

Dr. Susan M. Love is a pioneer in the field of women’s health. In her ongoing quest to eradicate breast cancer, she has used every avenue from founding the national advocacy movement to starting companies, engaging in research, and promoting breast cancer education. She serves on the boards of the National Breast Cancer Coalition, Y-ME, and the Young Survival Coalition, and was appointed by President Clinton to the National Cancer Advisory Board. She is a Clinical Professor of Surgery at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, founder and Chief Medical Officer of Windy Hill Medical, a breast cancer prevention company, and senior partner in LLuminari, a multimedia women’s health company. She is the author of Dr. Susan Love’s Breast Book, termed “the Bible for women with breast cancer” by The New York Times and Dr. Susan Love’s Menopause and Hormone Book, one of the first to sound the alarm against the widespread use of postmenopausal hormones.

Pamela Ludwig Hearn has focused her career on raising funds for institutions and organizations about which she feels passionately. She currently serves as Executive Director for the Catholic Healthcare West Foundation for International Health. She previously served as the Executive Director of Development for the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels. She has also worked for and with many of the most prestigious non-profit institutions in Los Angeles, including, Childrens Hospital Los Angeles, The Music Center of Los Angeles County, The Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Autry National Center, and Good Shepherd Center for Homeless Women and Children. Her personal philanthropic interests reach internationally. As a volunteer, she actively fundraises and networks for the African Elephant Conservation Trust, the Trust for African Rock Art, TUSK African Wildlife Trust, and the Maasailand Preservation Trust.

Kate McLean provides consulting services to nonprofit organizations and foundations. Ms. McLean has worked more than 35 years in the philanthropic world, recently as President of the Ventura County Community Foundation where she grew the Foundation from $300,000 in assets to more than $70 million in current and future gifts. In other work, she was responsible for starting Ventura County’s shelters for runaways, their first group homes for abused children, the first battered women’s shelter and the County’s information and referral system among many other programs. Currently, Ms. McLean is a member of the Board of Regents for California Lutheran University, sits on the boards of a private grantmaking foundation and a Latino foundation and the Ventura County Civic Alliance, both organizations that she helped established. Ms. McLean is also the co-founder of the Social Justice Fund for Ventura County, a new grantmaking and education organization focused on the root causes of social problems.

Nina Merrill is Vice President of Association Management Services, Inc., a full-service association management company. Ms. Merrill has more than 20 years of nonprofit experience. She was formerly the Executive Director of the Rotary Club of Los Angeles and the founding Executive Director of the Association of Air Medical Services. Ms. Merrill has served on the Board of Directors of the Good Shepherd Center for Homeless Women, Council of the Children’s Burn Center, and the Los Angeles Affiliate of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.

| Betsy Buchalter Adler |

Betsy Buchalter Adler is a principal in the San Francisco firm of Silk, Adler & Colvin, where she specializes in the law of tax-exempt organizations with an emphasis on grantmaking charities, including family, company, and community foundations; internal governance issues; and international philanthropy.
She is the immediate past chair of the Exempt Organizations Committee of the Tax Section of the American Bar Association and was the founding chair of the Tax-Exempt Organizations Committee of the California State Bar’s Tax Section. She currently serves on the Internal Revenue Service’s Advisory Committee for Tax-Exempt and Governmental Entities and on the advisory boards of the National Center for Philanthropy and the Law at New York University and the International Center for Not-for-Profit Law.
Ms. Adler received her B.A. in 1971 from the University of California (Santa Cruz) and her J.D. in 1982 from Boalt Hall School of Law, University of California (Berkeley). She has taught the law of nonprofit organizations at Boalt Hall and lectures frequently on legal issues of interest to non¬profit organizations. She is the author of The Rules of the Road: A Guide to the Law of Charities in the United States, published in 1999 by the Council on Foundations (and translated into Chinese under the auspices of the China Association of NGOs and the China NPO Network) and numerous articles on nonprofit legal issues. Ms. Adler has served on the board of directors of the Foundation Incubator, Piedmont Children’s Choirs, and Women Chefs & Restaurateurs.

Elizabeth Browning is co-founder and Chief Executive Officer of LLuminari, an innovative health education company. Co-founded with Susan Love, MD, and Nancy Snyderman, MD, LLuminari works with media partners and leading corporations to enlighten and inspire people to live healthier lives. Prior to founding LLuminari, Ms. Browning was President of DuPont Consumer Health, a division of DuPont’s Nutrition and Health strategic business unit, where she led the globalization of the LYCRA brand and the company’s entry into e-business. She is also actively involved in the community and launched the Alexis de Tocqueville Society in Delaware, serving twice as its chair. Ms. Browning has served on the Board of United Way of Delaware and as Board Chair for the Easter Seals of Delaware and the eastern shore of Maryland. She is also a member of the Forum for Executive Women in Philadelphia

Melissa Etheridge is a Grammy-Award winning rock vocalist and gay activist. Ms. Etheridge announced in October 2004 that she was diagnosed with breast cancer, and has since requested that in lieu of flowers, cards, or gifts, that her fans send a donation to the Dr. Susan Love Research Foundation. She won Grammy Awards for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance for "Ain't It Heavy" (1992) and "Come To My Window" (1994). Her recent appearance on the internationally televised Grammy Awards heightened awareness regarding the need for new paradigms in breast cancer research and awareness.

Donald J. Franceschini retired as Vice Chairman and Director of the Sara Lee Corporation in 1997, where he was responsible for the $7.5 billion personal products line of businesses that included such brands as Hanes, Champion, Playtex, Bali, Donna Karan, Ralph Lauren, and a number of international brands marketed in 26 countries. Additionally, he oversaw the corporation’s legal and human resources functions. Prior to joining Sara Lee in 1991, Donald was President of Playtex Apparel and a partner in the leveraged buyout of that corporation. Sara Lee acquired Playtex Apparel in 1991, and Mr. Franceschini was named Chief Executive Officer of Playtex Apparel. Sara Lee Corporation is a global packaged food and consumer products company with annual sales of $20 billion.

Chris Hershey is President and Founder of Hershey Associates and Cause Communications, both nationally recognized communications agencies. She consults with CEOs and senior executives throughout the country, advising on questions of positioning, market strategy, and brand identity. Ms. Hershey served on the national board of the Association of Professional Design Firms and on the boards of the Santa Monica Museum of Art and the International Association of Business Communicators and Art Directors Club of Los Angeles. Her professional affiliations include American Institute of Graphic Artists and Women, Inc. Chris Hershey is also listed in Who’s Who in California and Who’s Who in the West.

Ms. Levin is extremely active in philanthropic endeavors and has won a number of awards and recognition for her contributions to the community. She and her husband, Paul Levin, MD, recently endowed the Newfield-Levin Chair in Holocaust Studies at UC Santa Cruz, where Ms. Levin has served as President of the UC Santa Cruz Foundation. In addition to the Dr. Susan Love Research Foundation, Anne Levin serves on the Board of Directors for Palco Labs, Inc., her family owned medical device manufacturing company, is member of the ED chapter of P.E.O., and serves as Trustee of the Golden State Museum and Archives Foundation. Her years of volunteer activities culminated with the publication of a children’s book, SALLY SLUG, with illustrations by Patricia Rebele. The profits from this book exclusively benefit UC Santa Cruz.

Maria Shriver is the First Lady of California, a veteran TV news reporter and a member of the prominent Kennedy family. Ms. Shriver has been a TV news reporter for 28 years, but left to fulfill her role as First Lady. Her past philanthropic efforts have been focused on women and children. Recently, in her role as First Lady, Ms. Shriver has focused her energy on supporting California's military families. She remains a dedicated supporter of the Special Olympics, and of "Best Buddies.” She is also the Honorary Chair of the California Service Corps. She serves as the Chair of the California Governor's Conference on Women and Families. Under her leadership, last year's conference became the most successful women's conferences in California history. At the conference Ms. Shriver began a new California tradition - the Minerva Awards. Four women were honored with this award for their outstanding contributions, creating positive change, and making a difference in the lives of Californians. As First Lady, she has also championed the creation of California's first Women's Museum.

Brock J. Vinton is President and CEO of the Commonwealth Group, Ltd., a diversified real estate development company formed in 1974 through a series of mergers. The Commonwealth Group provides development, construction and property management services to office and industrial real estate sectors. Recently, the Group expanded operations into high-end, custom designed residential homes in Colorado. Its primary operations are in the Mid-Atlantic States, including Delaware, Maryland, and Pennsylvania. Throughout his career, Mr. Vinton has been both an active investor and supporter of entrepreneurs, particularly in health care, and was instrumental in financing and leading the creation of the Omega Medical Center in Delaware, a state of the art diagnostic center.
