Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) I went into early menopause at age 34, and have suffered from horrible menopausal symptoms. I’ve found that hormones really help. How long can I stay on them? You ask a very good question. We are continually learning more about the best way to manage menopausal symptoms in women who go into early menopause. If you still have your uterus, you should be using estrogen and progesterone. If you have had your uterus removed, you can take estrogen alone. This is the recommendation regardless of what kind of hormones you are using. We have no reason to believe that bioidentical hormones are any safer than any other types that are synthetically made. You should not wait until you go off of estrogen to start paying attention to your bone health. In fact, it's never too early to start working on keeping your bones strong. This includes doing weight-bearing exercise as well as ensuring you are getting the proper amounts of calcium and vitamin D. You can learn more about bone health here.
