Dr. Susan Love
A Message from Dr. Love
A Gift That Matters
With the season of giving upon us, I want to begin by thanking you for how much you have given to me this year by supporting the Dr. Susan Love Foundation and our primary goal: finding the cause and prevention of breast cancer.

I also want to thank you for your commitment to helping me get the message out that awareness is NOT enough. We’ve now had 25 years of breast cancer awareness—and we still don’t understand the cause or ways to prevent this disease. And the cure is NOT enough either. Not if it means surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, hormone therapy, and targeted therapy—all of which have side effects and cause long-term collateral damage to our bodies!

We can find the cause. We need to find the cause. I am more convinced than ever that the road that will get us there will require us to look at the areas of research that have been neglected by the grant givers, scientists, and universities because they seem too “out there” or “too risky.” But as we’ve seen time and time again, it’s big risk projects that have the potential for big rewards.

That’s why we at the Foundation are not afraid to take these risks. MORE >

’Tis the Season for Breast Cancer Stories
Why do the media’s breast cancer stories come all at once? Last week, for example, you may have noticed an increased number of stories on mammography. The reason? The annual Radiological Society of North America meeting was going on. This also might be why all the stories seem to be in support of mammography.

Now, the San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium is upon us. This very large annual meeting brings together an international group of scientists, drug companies, physicians, and advocates to talk about the latest research, products, and devices. Drug companies and researchers have already begun sending the media lots of press releases about findings that will be presented, But it is often hard to distinguish the wheat from the chaff, and the media often report them without critique or explanation. I will be blogging from the meeting, providing insider insights as well as guidance on how to interpret all of this information. MORE >

Your Questions
My pathology report showed extensive DCIS. It also looked like I had micrometastasis. What should I do? The micrometastasis was discovered because your surgeon performed an axillary lymph node dissection. Typically a surgeon will only perform a lymph node dissection for ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) when there is extensive DCIS (like you had) or when a patient has a high-grade comedotype DCIS.
