A Message from Dr. Love
New Ideas for the New Year
Remember how worried we were that all of our computers would crash when we welcomed in the year 2000? Now, a decade later, don’t those concerns seem so, well, last century as we find ourselves spending more time than we could ever have imagined online, wirelessly updating our Facebook status, tweeting on Twitter, and blogging about what we are doing.

It was all that typing that got me to thinking: How could we use the Internet to change the face of breast cancer research?

As you know, my first idea was the Love/Avon Army of Women, which we launched in 2008 with a generous grant from the Avon Foundation for Women. The Army of Women offered a revolutionary new Internet-based opportunity for women to partner with research scientists to move breast cancer beyond a cure—and, in response, more than 325,000 women have already said, “Yes! Sign Me Up!”

The Army of Women’s success got me to thinking: What if we could enroll millions of women in an online breast cancer study? Well, that kernel of an idea has come to fruition, and I am thrilled to tell you that 2010 is getting off to an amazing start with our launch of the groundbreaking Health of Women Study (HOW)—the largest-ever study designed to tell us HOW breast cancer starts and HOW to prevent it! Kimberly Baltzell, PhD, and Gertrude Buehring, PhD
The Dr. Susan Love Research Foundation gives out pilot grants to jumpstart innovative research and to encourage scientists to pursue the intraductal approach. These grants are awarded through an innovative grant process at the Foundation’s biennial International Symposium on the Intraductal Approach to Breast Cancer.

In 2007, Kimberly Baltzell, RN, PhD, an assistant adjunct professor at the University of California, San Francisco, and Gertrude Buehring, PhD, a professor of virology at the University of California, Berkeley, received a $5,000 grant from the Foundation for their project, “Oncogenic Viruses in Nipple Aspirate Fluid: Biomarkers for Breast Cancer Risk Assessment?” The pilot grant provided the foundation the investigators needed to receive $490,000 from the Avon Foundation to pursue this line of research.

We will miss her smile and her enthusiasm for life.

In her honor, the Foundation has established the Jennifer Lyon Fund. To make a donation, click here.

Your Questions
My doctor just told me I have osteopenia. Should I be worried?
Osteopenia is a term that began to be used shortly after the development of the DEXA scan, which is used to measure bone density. Today, any woman who scores between –1 and –2.5 on her DEXA scan is told that she has osteopenia.

Many women assume that once they have been diagnosed with osteopenia they should start taking a drug that can increase bone density—but that’s not the case.
