A Message from Dr. Love
I don’t know about you, but after this rainy and snowy winter I’m especially happy that we are seeing buds on the trees and crocuses peaking though the snow. It makes me feel as if almost anything is possible!
This sense of renewal is infusing our work at the Foundation as well. What can you expect to see over the next few months?
- We will be making improvements to the Health of Women (HOW) Study.
- Based on your feedback, we will be updating the Love/Avon Army of Women website, to better meet your needs.
- Our staff and office space will be expanding! I look forward to introducing you to all the wonderful new people who will be working with the Foundation!
To be sure, none of this would be possible without you! Our passion fuels our work, but it is your support that makes it possible. Your donation to the Foundation will help us to continue on our mission to go beyond a cure and end breast cancer in our lifetime.

The Dr. Susan Love Research Foundation gives out pilot grants to jumpstart innovative research and to encourage scientists to pursue the intraductal approach. These grants are awarded through an innovative grant process at the Foundation’s biennial International Symposium on the Intraductal Approach to Breast Cancer.
In 2007, Catherine Carpenter, PhD, an associate adjunct professor at the University of California, Los Angeles, received a $5,000 grant from the Foundation for her project, “Impact of Diet and Exercise Intervention on Breast Ductal Fluid Among Overweight to Obese Postmenopausal Women,” which is exploring the impact weight change has on the breast. Two years later, when the study was ready to get underway, she recruited study participants through the Love/Avon Army of Women.

Dr. Love will be the featured guest at the Breast Cancer Care and Research Fund’s Wellness Lecture on Monday, April 12, 2010, at 7:00pm at the Fairmount Preparatory Academy Theatre in Anaheim, Calif. Send an email to RSVP for Dr. Love’s talk. Download the full schedule of events.
Rarely a day goes by where we don’t get an email from a woman who has been diagnosed with breast cancer who is worried about whether she should be eating soy products. That’s why it was big news when a study published in February in the Journal of the American Medical Association found that women with breast cancer who ate soy had a decreased risk of having a cancer recurrence or dying of the disease.

Research Update
The 7th International Symposium on the Intraductal Approach to Breast Cancer will be held February 23-27, 2011, in Santa Monica, Calif. Registration information coming soon! You can read conference reports from all of our past Symposiums here.
The Foundation needs 20 Los Angeles-area women who are between 35 and 55 years of age to take part in a study testing a new nipple fluid patch. We need all women--women who are high-risk, women with breast cancer, women who have never had the disease. The one requirement is that you must be able to squeeze fluid from your nipple.
The patch we are testing collects the breast fluid, which will later be tested to see if it contains certain biomarkers. The test may one day be used to identify which women are at increased risk of getting breast cancer.
The patch test doesn't hurt and takes only a few minutes. Volunteers will be compensated $50 for their time. If you think you qualify, please call (310) 828-0060, ext. 32, or send us an email.
