April 2010

A Message from Dr. Love
April Adventures
I can’t believe it’s already April! We’ve got so much going on, and time is just flying by!

April started with an amazing event: MAMMOJAM 2010, which was held at the newly opened Rise Club in Hollywood, Calif. More than 250 women and men came out for this Foundation fundraiser, where we danced to everything from salsa to disco to Lady Gaga. What was it like? See it here.

Next up—for our New York/New Jersey/Philly-area supporters: An Evening of Classic Lily Tomlin, with an opening performance by Kate Clinton! This fundraiser will be held April 17th at 8pm at the St. George Theatre in Staten Island. It’s sure to sell out, so buy your tickets today!

Unfortunately, I’m going to miss Lily’s performance. But there’s a good reason why! I’ve been invited to offer a Special Session about the Love/Avon Army of Women at the American Association for Cancer Research Annual Meeting in Washington, DC.

Looking to May, I’m hoping that I’ll get to see many of you at the National Breast Cancer Coalition Fund Annual Advocacy Training Conference. It’s the best way I know to make sure our voices as breast cancer advocates are heard in Washington, DC, and beyond! And, we get too dance, too!

BRCA Gene Patent Ruled Invalid
Last week, a federal court judged ruled that it was illegal for the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes to be patented. This is very important news!

This ruling followed a lawsuit brought by a group of patients and scientist who were represented by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) and Public Patent Foundation. Significantly, it marks the first time a court had found patents on genes unlawful. The ruling also calls into question whether the patents now held on about 2,000 other human genes are also valid. Your Questions
I just learned that I have LCIS—lobular carcinoma in situ. Does this mean I have cancer? What should I do?
Under the microscope LCIS appears as small, round cells stuffing the lobules, which normally have no cells inside of them (see diagram). If there are only a few cells and they're not too odd-looking, you have lobular hyperplasia, while if they fill the whole lobule and look very atypical (odd), you have LCIS. MORE >
