A Message from Dr. Love
With Mother’s Day just around the corner, I’ve found myself thinking even more about what it takes to raise a child, to obtain personal goals, to become the best person one can be.
I’ve also been thinking about the mothers who are not here to celebrate this day because their lives were cut short by breast cancer. It’s impossible to fill the void that these women have left behind. But there is something that we can do to honor them: continue the work that is necessary to end breast cancer in our lifetimes.
The Dr. Susan Love Research Foundation is dedicated to moving breast cancer beyond a cure and ending it once and for all. We continue to be in the forefront of breast cancer research. From our innovative and groundbreaking Love/Avon Army of Women, which has enrolled nearly 332,000 volunteers, and our Health of Women Study to our intraductal research and the pilot grants we give to jumpstart innovative research projects, we continue to be ahead of the game. I firmly believe we are on the right track. But to continue to move forward we need your financial support.
This Mother’s Day, I hope you will consider honoring a woman you know with a gift to the Foundation to support our research efforts.

Hot Topics
I want to draw your attention to an exciting study that was recently published online in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute and that is truly deserving of the media attention it has received.
Why am I so excited? Well, this is the first time that scientists have
discovered biomarkers that appear to predict which women with the pre-cancer ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) are most likely to go on to develop invasive breast cancer and which are not. The researchers also identified a separate group that was more likely to have a local recurrence of DCIS. Interestingly, these two groups were not the same.
Right now, when a woman is diagnosed with DCIS, she is typically told that she will need to have a lumpectomy, radiation, and possibly five years of hormone therapy. For women with extensive DCIS throughout their breast, the recommended treatment is typically a mastectomy. These treatments are not being given because a woman has cancer.
